Raymond Hamilton Van Wagener, a Darien resident for over 50 years, passed away on Friday, July 9, at his home of natural causes. He was 81. He was born August 13, 1922 in Stamford, CT to the late Lorenzo and Lily Mariait (Cooper) Van Wagener. Mr. Van Wagener graduated from Stamford High School in 1942, entered the Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery and served in World War II in the Philippines. He received his BSME from Yale University in 1949 and completed post-graduate work at Columbia, New York University and Harvard.
Mr. Van Wagener's working career earned 20-plus patents and included Singer Sewing Machines, Schick in Stamford, Swingline, AEL where he served as President and Magnetek, Inc., where he served as Divisional Vice President. Music was his avocation. As a boy, he played saxophone and clarinet at weddings and events, and sang with Dr. Laurence Perry in the first Stamford All Male Chorus. Mr. Van Wagener also sang in annual performances of "Messiah and with St. John Parish choir. Mr. Van Wagener is survived by his wife Shirley P. Van Wagener of Darien; his four children, Raymond H. Van Wagener, Jr. of Greenwood Village, Colo; Gretchen Dailey of Darien; Erica Hilary of Potomac, Md; and Kristin Holland of Fairfield. He is also survived by one sister, Ruth Kunz of White River Junction, Vt., and seven grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St John R.C. Church on Tuesday July 13. A private family interment was held at St John R.C. Cemetery in Darien. The Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, Darien, handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to "Joy to the World Foundation, c/o Mr. R. H.
